With the state season over, it’s time for the last major event of the year – the Australian Quidditch Championships this weekend! 24 teams from all across Australia are now making their way up to the University of Sunshine Coast, Sippy Downs QLD.
The Weasleys are excited to be competing in their first interstate tournament (excluding ACT). On Saturday (Day 1), 24 teams (divided into 4 pools of 6 teams) will play a 5-game round robin, for a chance to break into Day 2’s “Sweet Sixteen” finalists. From there the top 16 will play elimination finals until only 2 remain. The remaining 17-24 teams will also participate in consolation / ranking matches.
The Weasleys will be looking to improve on their previous 2 Championship appearances. Back in their 2016 debut appearance, they were unable to win any of their 5 pool-play matches, though managed to snag a victory against the UQ Dumblebees in their Day 2 consolation match. In 2017 they won their first pool-play Championship match against the Monash Mudbloods.
Being seeded low in Pod 5 of 6 this year, the Weasleys are statistically only expected to win 1 of their 5 matches in Day 1 pool play. Still the Weasleys will remain hopeful, needing 2 wins to advance into the “Sweet 16” finalists. The best prospect for these wins comes in the form of their Pod 4 & Pod 6 opponents, which the former happens to be University of Sydney Unbreakables – the team they lost to in the State Grand Final. And the Weasleys will be looking to repeat their 2016 win over Pod 6’s University of Queensland Dumblebees.
It will be a tough weekend for the Weasleys, who will have to work very hard for those 2 wins, especially given the hectic 5-match-in-1-day schedule. The Weasleys’ tougher opponents on Day 1 will be Sydney City Serpents, Melbourne Ravens and USC Dementors.
The Day 1 Weasleys schedule:
- 8:30am Weasleys vs UQ Dumblebees
- 10:10am Weasleys vs Melbourne Ravens
- 11:50am Weasleys vs USC Dementors
- 2:50pm Weasleys vs Sydney City Serpents
- 4:30pm Weasleys vs Uni of Sydney Unbreakables
The Day 2 schedule should see all teams competing in 3 further matches, whether these are finals or consolation matches is dependant on their Day 1 results.

The Weasleys were a little unlucky to just miss out on being seeded in Pod 4. Despite being equal 1st for most of the NSW Division 2 season, they were forced to forfeit their last round of matches in Newcastle due to insufficient available players to fulfil gender ratio, and hence dropped down to 3rd place. As a result the Weasleys were leapfrogged by UNSW Snapes on a Plane in the final season rankings, and so the Snapes seeded into Pod 4 and the Weasleys in Pod 5.
Back in October the Weasleys hosted the NSW State Quidditch Finals in Minto’s Kayess Park. The Weasleys managed to snag a Grand Final berth by defeating UNSW Snapes on a Plane 130*-100 in a tight semi-final match.
But the Weasleys weren’t good enough to claim the trophy, losing 110*-20 to the University of Sydney Unbreakables in the Division 2 Grand Final. The University of Sydney really dominated the 2018 season, with their A team – the Unspeakables – also winning the Division 1 Grand Final against previous champions, the Sydney City Serpents.
